Copy and paste between devices: the complete guide

Your laptop clipboard and phone clipboard are completely separate. Copying on one doesn't magically appear on the other. Unless you set something up. Here are all the ways to bridge that gap.

Option 1: Browser-based sync (works across everything)

ClipboardSyncer connects devices through your WiFi network. Open the site on both devices, click sync on both, and text flows between them. Works between any combination: Android to Windows, iPhone to Mac, Linux to Chromebook. Anything with a browser.

Pros: no account, no app install, works across all OS combinations. Cons: both devices need to be on same WiFi.

Option 2: Apple Universal Clipboard

If you're all-Apple (Mac + iPhone + iPad), Universal Clipboard works automatically. Copy on one device, paste on another. Requires same Apple ID, Bluetooth on, WiFi on, and Handoff enabled in settings.

Pros: seamless once set up. Cons: Apple devices only, sometimes unreliable, can't control what syncs.

Option 3: Windows clipboard sync

Windows 10/11 can sync clipboard between Windows PCs signed into same Microsoft account. Enable in Settings, System, Clipboard. Use Win+V to choose which items sync.

Pros: built into Windows. Cons: Windows to Windows only, doesn't reach phones.

Option 4: Third-party apps

Pushbullet, KDE Connect, AirDroid, and others offer clipboard sharing. They require accounts and app installation on each device.

Pros: feature-rich, work over internet (not just WiFi). Cons: accounts required, apps to install, some have paid tiers.

Which should you use?

If all your devices are Apple: Universal Clipboard is the easiest since it's built in.

If you have mixed devices (which most people do): use ClipboardSyncer. Open a browser tab on each device, sync, done. No installation, no account, works across any OS combination.

If you need sync over the internet (not same WiFi): use a messaging app to send text to yourself, or a cloud notes service.

Tips for smooth cross-device paste

  • Bookmark ClipboardSyncer on both devices for quick access
  • Make sure both devices are on the same WiFi (not one on mobile data)
  • Disable VPN while syncing (VPNs can make devices appear on different networks)
  • For sensitive text, disable sync after transferring and clear the clipboard
  • Use the word counter to verify all text transferred correctly
